[:en]Last year, at least 560,000 people were killed violently across the world, corresponding to 7.5 violent deaths per 100,000 of the global population. That is slightly slower than in 2015 (7.73) and 2014 (8.12), according to the 2017 Small Arms Survey . In 2016, 385,000 violent deaths (68 percent of the total) were intentional homicides and firearms were used to kill 210,000 people (38 percent of all victims). The highest levels of death due to firearms were recorded in Latin America and the Caribbean. The following infographic shows countries where gun deaths accounted for more than 50 percent of all violent death in 2016 or the latest available year. In countries with the lowest rates of lethal violence, only 12 percent of all killings are committed with firearms. In this world statistic, Albania is only at the ninth place, just after Central and South American countries. Albania seems to surpass even the USA, a much bigger country than our where violence is read and felt every day. From the following chart we can see that in Albania 65 percent of violent deaths are due to firearms, alarming because in Albania it is forbidden to sell firearms to citizenship. The issue of firearms in Albania is very much felt because they are illegally found for a few hundred euros. In Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States, firearms accounted for nearly 8 out of every 10 violent deaths last year. Crime has been a major issue on the island for years, a problem that has grown due to a $74 billion debt crisis which has devastated state institutions and created high unemployment levels. Meanwhile, the illegal drug trade is flourishing and that has led to increasing levels of violence. Firearms also contribute to the majority of killings in Venezuela and El Salvador where they account for 79 and 78 percent of violent deaths respectively. Firearms constantly make headlines in the United States where they account for over 60 percent of all violent deaths. Article freely adapted from the original on Forbes [:]
